Hi, I'm new, and I've got a few questions...
Okay, I recently bought a book: Puppet Planet
Does anyone else have it? If you do, have you made any puppets from it? How did they turn out? Pictures?
And if anyone from the UK has it - where did you get the foam rubber for them? Any suggestions as to where I could try?
Thanks a lot guys!

Hello and nice to meet you all
I'm rather new to the whole puppet making thing, but I have recently ventured into the art of puppets with moving heads via a control (if you know what a woodbaby is, then you pretty much have a good idea of what I'm making).
I've only made a couple of puppets thus far (prototypes), but they have been great learning tools for me.
Samson the Kiwi:
This was my very first puppet of this kind. He was full of bugs (but did work), and taught me a lot about the process of making puppets of this nature. There is also a video
of him in action.
Zizzy the Pangolin:
Before I started the scale work -
Shots of what I have done so far -
And here is a video
of the pangolin in action (the head is 5 inches long and the body is about 39 inches from snout to the end of the tail).
Everything is hand sculpted/sewn/designed by me. I am hoping that in the future I can do things like this for a living if people show enough interest ^^.
Just some side info: In college I was a Studio Art major with a concentration in 3D and Ceramics, and I'm trying to extend my degree into something that will utilize the skills I developed in college. I know this info might not be really all that snazzy (or even relevant to the post), but it does give a little background into why this interests me so.

hello! i'm new here and i have a question. i live in iowa and i was wondering if any one knew of a subsitute for jersey knit fabric. i have looked everywhere for it. i'm looking to make some japanese dollsand i need it for the outside lining of them. and of course ths being iowa and the latest trends around here is scrapbooking ( bla) and quilting (another bla). i can not find one single yard of any kind of knit fabric!! our joann's fabrics closed and even in the on line store i can't find any...
i did find a website where i can order and i will do that for now but i would rather find something locally if possable .. so does any one know if there is something i can subsitute?
i'm not a fancy dollmaker, i make mostly cloth and rag dolls. but i found patterns on the net i want to try and i bought a japanese book called cute dolls and i want to try them. i've been making dolls sence i was old enough to sew some aren't very nice but some are fair. i hope you don't mind. i checked out this site and saw all the cloth doll pitures.. and thought Yea! somewhere i can go and see others fine work and learn and ask questions.
thanks for having this group.. doll makers are far and few between!!
and sorry i hav no doll making icons as of yet. ( i never thought there would be a community like this!) Current Mood: creative

No matter how I tried to spell it, the name "Lucky Seven" was already taken, so the new community for my travelling dolls is travellingdolls
. 4 of them have already been sent to "billet" with their new temporary "hosts" and hopefully the first photos of the adventures of Mahandra, Ace, William, Malaika, Lily, GInger and Trevor will be posted in there by the end of the week. I don't have a digital camera, just a gronky "old-fashioned"
35 mm so I have to get the film developed beffore I can post pictures. I hope they turn out okay because the battery died in my camera and even after inserting a new one they still haven't rewound.

Well, I just finished my Travelling Group. Mahandra, Ace and Lily will be coming with me to Toronto so I can give them to Mark, Janette and Jan to pass on and while we're there I hope to get a picture of the dolls on the glass floor at the C.N tower. I took the four remaining dolls that aren't going to their temporary billets tomorrow and took some fun pictures of them around here until they go to their next location. The idea is as follows. Each doll comes with a piece of printed documentation explaining the concept. Seven dolls will be travelling with seven of my friends who will take pictures and email them to me, or join the community if they already have an LJ account, and then they will each pass them on to another friend who will do likewise before passing the doll on to another friend. It will be interesting to see where my friends' friends send the dolls. I included rapidtrabbit
because I thought it would be a fun thing for him to talk about on his show.
Mark, Janette and Jan will get their dolls in Toronto tomorrow. Ardith and Sherrie will get theirs next time I see them and I will mail dolls to Della and rapidtrabbit
as they are the first ones outside of Canada. Della is all the way in England and she does a lot of travelling. She and her husband have been to Spain and France quite a few times.
I have the community set up, but I don't want to post anything until my pictures are developed. I still don't have a digital camera, only an "old fashioned" 35mm camera.
